THE ANGEL IS IN THE DETAILS!
Listen, I know life is a mystery, but sometimes things are just hidden in plain sight. So much so, it can be downright absurd how we miss things.
And yet, the mind is so darn good at dismissing the familiar. Not only that, it wants everything to be familiar because it doesn’t like discomfort at all.
However, the familiar can often cause us to numb out, miss out and check out.
“CUT THE DAMN GRASS!”
Growing up, James was responsible to mow the lawn. It was his “chore” and his father’s self-granted permission to badger him weekly.
Even though James agreed to do the task on Saturdays, he would be abruptly awoken from a deep and peaceful slumber every Saturday morning to the disbelieving, harsh, critical and condescending voice of his father saying, “WHEN ARE YOU CUTTING THE GRASS?”
As you might imagine, hatred started brooding within James and his desire to rebel only escalated.
FAST FORWARD TO ADULTHOOD
When childhood rebellion becomes adult self-sabotage, we want to pay attention.
The rebellious persona within James became such an identified version of himself growing up it then became the part that chose to smoke weed incessantly into adulthood (to dull his unrecognized & unprocessed pain).
He was using marijuana to keep fighting the past even though he was no longer there.
What was once a personal-power move became the personal disempowerment problem and life was mirroring this back to him.
YOU CAN’T MAKE THIS SH*T UP
Let’s look at some wild synchronicities just in the languaging his life reveals. It’s the “hidden in plain sight” stuff.
- His father wouldn’t let the grass grow before James needed to “cut it down”.
James constantly felt cut down by his father. Now, any time James is ready for a personal growth spurt, he cuts himself down by acting out with weed, dismissing his own wants and desires.
- James was responsible to cut the “grass”. Of course, grass is yet another name for weed! We can’t make this sh*t up!
What better way to rebel than to use “grass” as a “kiss my %ss”? James uses weed as a way to rebel and do things his way, not his father’s way. It’s his “I’ll show you” persona.
- James proclaims, “I love using pot!” The reason? Because he derives a sense of freedom to have no limits, no boundaries and no moderation externally imposed upon him.
The truth is James is seeking freedom and the act of using pot gives him that sense. It provides a movement away from outside controls (the father) and an exertion of personal power.
LET THE POISON BECOME THE REMEDY
Of course, as we can see, this aspect, rebellious persona, is driving James’ life in a dead-end direction.
But we don’t want to throw the baby out with the bathwater either! We want to “retrain and redirect” this inner source of pure power and potential in a positive, life-affirming direction. In other words, we can use the poison to heal the pain by way of understanding the underlying dynamics.
James now recognizes this deep reservoir has tremendous personal-power and he can use it in a positive direction toward a new trajectory, one that serves & supports him.
So, instead of this persona running on the old program (fending off an external threat that is no longer there), he can instruct this aspect to power-up in ways that support his true heart’s desires.
